The Empathy Belly

empathy belly
Source:Empathy Belly

I am in the middle of my third pregnancy and I had forgotten how uncomfortable the whole business is. It is difficult for others to grasp this concept, but now there is a way to enlighten them (if that is the right expression), via the Empathy Belly.

As you can see from the above picture, the empathy belly is a specially weighted garment which simulates pregnancy. (How I would love my husband to wear one for a while!). According to the website, it allows wearers to experience the following symptoms of pregnancy:

Weight gain of 30 pounds (13.6 kg.)
Fetal kicking and stroking movements
Shallow breathing and shortness of breath
Increased blood pressure, pulse and body temperature
Bladder pressure and frequency of urination
Low backaches; shift in center of gravity; waddling
Fatigue, irritability, and much, much more!

Unfortunately, it is a little pricey at $499 for anyone to buy, but I can see why it is popular with teachers.

I wonder if you could help me. I am a midwife in the UK and looking to buy an empathy belly, do you know where I can get one?

Sorry - we can only find these at empathybelly.org in the US. Maybe you could ask them about shipping? Unfortunately, the virtualparenting.co.uk does not seem to be trading but it might be worth contacting them anyway.

Good luck and let us know if you find one :)
